On Li’s dissertation Wandering Viewpoint (漂點) for solo cello and two ensembles, featuring Nicholas Photinos, Chicago Classical Review writes:

“… the work was an effective concertante showcase for Photinos. Li’s compositional voice is original and somewhat difficult to describe; texturally the work possesses an Impressionist  surface but its spirit was richly imbued with distinctly 21st-century dissonance, aggression, and volatility. Photinos’ virtuoso cello playing was scintillating and the dialogues in which Li had the two supporting ensembles interact with him and each other were particularly engaging.”

Album review on Li’s Tiang Jing Sha (aka, Shivering Winds, Serene Sky) (天淨沙) for solo cello with voice included in cellist Kate Dillingham’s album “Crossing”

“One stand-out track on the album is Yuan-Chen Li’s Tiang Jing Sha (Shivering Winds, Serene Sky), in which Dillingham performs a virtuosic and colorful cello line as accompaniment to her own singing. Critic on Li’s Aldebaran (畢宿五) for the sextet eighth blackbird

“The concert in UC’s Contempo series was titled “Tomorrow’s Music Today” and led off with the brief but intense Aldebaran by Yuan-Chen Li. The music was perfectly tailored for the instrumental makeup of eighth blackbird.  Their instruments were pushed to the limits and clangorous chords from piano and bells, and marimba touches played against the sound of strings created an unrelenting forward momentum. Critic on Li’s duet Cats’ Romp (貓嬉)

“Frequently, the “familiar sound” of this zither evokes real “Oriental” flavor, but it ends just as unusual as it began. Everything is reduced to softness on the zheng, with the pianist simply closing the piano lid. Critic on Li’s arrangement “Hakka Folksong Cycle”(客家舊歌新聲集) (2006)

“元貞的客家民謠作品,配器上,以大型國樂伴奏,音樂層次顯得豐富,渲染力十足。李元貞在客家歌唱劇《義民禮讚》中,安排賴碧霞演唱客家民謠北部調〈山歌子〉、〈上山採茶〉,與國樂團進行對話,藉由「臺灣國家國樂團」和國寶級歌后賴碧霞的搭配,呈現客家民謠簡樸的氛圍。對賴碧霞而言,跨界的參與,讓客家民謠增添了新風貌” ~ 陳怡君(第16屆國家文藝獎得主賴碧霞-藝術家素描)

 

On Li’s winning work Intermezzo: Tsan (間奏曲:參)

“直接將中國古琴置於十件西洋樂器之間,試圖讓這古老的樂器和異質性的西洋室內樂隊融為一體,並嘗試藉由不同音樂形象的遞變、演化與生滅來純化性靈,使復歸於寧靜。這部作品在聽覺上或許和義大利「單音主義」代表作曲家Scelsi的管絃樂作品有幾分神似,但作曲者對於音韻虛實變化的關注和音色渲染的刻意營造,卻讓作品的音響層次更豐富,音色的感染力也更強。~連憲升 (傳藝雙月刊72期, 2007)
